Edu Life

The Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, has suspended its three months old nationwide strike action and has directed varsity lecturers to resume duty from Friday, February 8.

The suspension was announced Thursday evening following the tenth meeting between the FG and ASUU since the commencement of the strike in Nov. 2018.

After the plenary led by the Labour Minister, Chris Ngige and ASUU President, Abiodun Ogunyemi, the parties signed  a 7-point memorandum of action.

Earlier, Ngige noted that FG had resolved the eight contentious issues that led to the strike, explaining that N25 billion naira will be released for the revitalization of public universities.

He said visitation panels have been constituted and will commence work on March 2.

In his suspension speech, Ogunyemi  said, " ASUU is strongly convinced that if academics fail to fight the cause of university education, the fate that befell public primary and secondary schools would soon become the lot of the public university system in Nigeria. "

He added, "As we have always argued, the last thing ASUU members love doing is to cause disruption in smooth intellectual engagements with colleagues, friends and students right on our university campuses.

He said nonetheless, the strike action has proven to be effective and the only language understood by the goverment.

"The proclivity of the Nigerian ruling class, irrespective of which wing of the insensitive stock they belong, must be continually be tracked, engaged and resisted by all people of goodwill," he said.

ASUU embarked on an indefinite strike on November 4, 2018, following government’s failure to implement the agreement reached with the union in November 2016.

FG-ASUU Memorandum of Actio as presented by Ogunyemi

1. In addition to the N20 billion for 2018, the sum of N25 billion only would be released in April/May 2019, after which government would resume full implementation of the MoU of 2013.

2. Part-payment of the outstanding arrears of the earned academic allowances; defraying the balance up to 2018 in 4 tranches within 36 months; and mainstreaming further payments of EAA into the annual budgets beginning from 2019 budget.

3. PICA verification and the release of the arrears of salary shortfall at the Federal University of Agriculture, Makurdi, not later than 15th February 2019.

4. Strengthening the Consultative Committee on State-owned Universities (CCSOU), inaugurated on Monday, 28th January, 2019 to look into the issues of proliferation, underfunding and governance to consistently deliver on its mandate.

5. Payment of the outstanding EAA arrears of all eligible staff in the University of Ilorin, especially the loyal ASUU members whose appointments were illegally terminated by today, 7th February, 2019.

6. Acknowledgement and appreciation of Government for facilitating the release of the final letter of approval for the granting of operational license to NUPEMCO.

7. Visitation to all Federal Universities would commence tentatively by 11th March, 2019.

8. Provision of documented guidelines on procedures and roles of parties in the process of renegotiating FGN-ASUU Agreement of 2009 which would commence not later than 18th February 2019 and end by Friday 29th March, 2019.

Based on the initial proposals from Government, the Union made extensive consultations through its various organs. The final level of consultation was the meeting of the National Executive Council (NEC) which took place 6th

-7th February, 2019. NEC resolved that: Following a careful review of the report of engagements with the Federal

Government on proposals for addressing all outstanding in the 2013 MoU and 2017 MoA, NEC resolved that the current strike action by the Union should be suspended conditionally with effect from 12.01 a.m on Friday 8th February, 2019.

However, should Government fail to fulfill its part of the agreement as reflected in the 2019 Memorandum of Action, ASUU shall resume its suspended strike action as the Union deems necessary.

Lecturers plan another strike after ASUU strike is called off by Author Emmanuel Peter

ASUU Strike: Lecturers threaten fresh action against govt

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Kano State University of Science and Technology (KUST) Wudil branch, has threatened to embark on a fresh strike immediately after the nationwide strike, if the state government failed to meet its demands.

The ASUU KUST branch chairman, Mahadi Lawal-Yakubu issued the threat on Tuesday when he led members of the union on a courtesy visit to the Speaker, Kano State House of Assembly, Alhaji Kabiru Rurum, NAN reports.

Lawal-Yakubu told newsmen shortly after the visit that they were at the House to intimate the Speaker about their problems as well as other issues affecting the union.

According to him, the union found it necessary to discuss the challenges with the Speaker, with the hope that he would intervene in the issue to avert possible strike by the Union.

He explained that the state government had approved for the payment of some allowances, but up to this moment not a single Kobo was paid.

He added that, “The reasons behind the nationwide strike by the Union is also common in our University. We have the same challenges which we have to struggle to make sure is resolved or we go on the strike.

“As soon as the nationwide strike ends, we are going to give the state government a period of grace to look into the issue or we go on strike.

“Strike is not our desire, but it has become our last option in our struggle to ensure the betterment of the university, and also to make sure that our children get a quality education.

He stressed the need for the state government to look into the issue to avoid a fresh strike because “we were in first semester when the nationwide strike started.

The chairman appealed to the state House of Assembly to give the education sector priority in the budgetary allocation in the next budget.

In his remark, the Speaker assured the Union that the Assembly would look into the issues with a view to meeting the governor to resolve it.

He called on the union to exercise patience as the assembly would do its best to ensure amicable resolution of the problem.

Buhari is rigging 2019_General Election----Author Emmanuel Peter

How Buhari govt proved it has ‘already started rigging’ 2019 elections – Ozekhome

Constitutional lawyer and Human rights activist, Chief Mike Ozekhome SAN believes that the presidency has confirmed that it has already started rigging the forthcoming election by suspending the Chief Justice of Nigeria, CJN, Walter Onnoghen.

Ozekhome said this while condemning the response by the presidency to the concerns raised by the European Union, United States, US, and United Kingdom, UK, to Buhari’s suspension of Onnoghen.

A statement by the activist lawyer said the concern by the international communities amounted to raising the red flag and warning of danger ahead.

The senior advocate, in a statement entitled: “DID I HEAR GOVERNMENT WARN FOREIGN COUNTRIES OFF NIGERIA’S ELECTORAL AFFAIRS?” said: “They are literally telling the government to its face, “You are already rigging this election by the illegal suspension of the CJN. You are terrorizing the judiciary. We do not believe you will organize free, fair and credible elections. We are watching and monitoring you. We will not accept the outcome of any flawed elections.

“Rather than shut up and exercise caution from the usual brinkmanship and verbal diarrhea, at least for once, the combative government through its garrulous spokesman, Garba, went for the jogular of the international community daring it.

“Help me, someone, did I hear rightly, Mallam Garba Shehu, the SSA to President Buhari warn America, UK and EU countries to stop meddling in Nigeria’s warped electoral process that is already being rigged? Did I hear him well?

“Is Garba not a part and parcel of the APC government that deployed massive Hitlerite Goebeller propaganda during the 2014/2015 elections, enlisted the aid and cooperation of the international community that literally determined the outcome of the 2015 election?

“Was it not the APC that influenced John Kelly to come to Nigeria to hold series of clandestine meetings with the then APC opposition party, without meeting with government officials?

“Was it not Garba and his like that bamboozled Nigerians with a litany of false and fake promises to enter their ‘one chance’ vehicle of opaque government, anchored on cluelessness, directionless, outright lies and massive corruption that have made Nigeria the world headquarters of poverty and one of the 168 most corrupt nations in the world?

“Was Garba ever thinking that the international communities will fold their hands, legs akimbo, and ignore government’s totalitarian and despotic tendencies, particularly towards the forthcoming elections?

“Did Garba ever conceive that the international community is not aware that Nigerians are literally held down in servitude, under jackboot and gunboat democracy?

“Perhaps, Garba does not live on planet Earth, but on planet Neptune, Venus, Mercury, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, or even Mars, not to realize that the international community will take more than a passing interest in an election being conducted by the 200 million people biggest black democracy on Earth.

“Governments usually speak in calm diplomatese; more often using ambiguous language lased with sophistry that ruffles no feathers. But, the US, Uk and EU were frontal in raising the red flag against the PMB government, not only on the Onnoghen matter, but also on the already being flawed general conduct of the forth coming elections.

“The United States specifically expressed deep concerns over Onnoghen’s suspension, and deplored the executive’s decision to suspend and replace the CJN and head of the judicial branch, without the support of the legislative branch, on the eve of national and state elections: “We note widespread Nigerian criticisms that this decision is unconstitutional and that it undermines the independence of the judicial branch…

“That undercuts the stated determination of government, candidates, and political party leaders to ensure that the elections proceed in a way that is free, fair, transparent, and peaceful – leading to a credible result.

“We urge that the issues raised by this decision be resolved swiftly and peacefully in accordance with due process, full respect for the rule of law, and the spirit of the Constitution of Nigeria. Such action is needed urgently now to ensure that this decision does not cast a pall over the electoral process.

“We have heard a wide range of credible and independent voices, including in the Nigerian legal profession and civil society, who have expressed concern over the constitutionality of the executive branch’s suspension of the chief officer of the judiciary.

“We respect Nigeria’s sovereign authority and its right to adjudicate on constitutional provisions, but as friends of the Nigerian people, we are compelled to observe that the timing of this action, so close to national elections, gives cause for concern. It risks affecting both domestic and international perceptions on the credibility of the forthcoming elections.

“We, along with other members of the international community, are following developments closely. The UK government therefore urged all actors to maintain calm and address the concerns raised by the development through due process, demonstrating their commitment to respecting the Constitution and the impartial administration of the rule of law. It further urged the actors to take steps to ensure that elections take place in an environment conducive to a free, fair and peaceful process.”

Policeman killed in Edo was a cultist – CP

Policeman killed in Edo was a cultist – CP

The Commissioner of Police in Edo, Hakeem Odumosun, has said that the policeman killed by unknown gunmen in Benin on Saturday night was a member of a secret cult.

The CP told the News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) on telephone that two other persons were killed in the shoot out that claimed the life of the officer.

NAN had reported that a police officer, identified as Oisa Ehigie, was shot dead along Normayo/Sakponba road of Benin City.

It was also reported that the killing may not be unconnected with activities of secret cults that had claimed several lives in the city recently.

The commissioner said the slain officer was killed alongside two members of his cult group.

According to him, the slain policeman died while fighting on the side of his cult group against rival cult group.

“Three people were killed in the fight, the police officer and two others.

“I have gone to see his family. It is a cult killing and the officer is a cultist,” the CP said.

The commissioner, who said arrests have been made in relation to the killings, also said some guns had been recovered.

ASUU STRIKE STILL WITHOUT HOPE.....

ASUU reveals what FG must do to suspend current strike

Author Emmanuel Peter

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) at the weekend revealed that the union can only suspend its ongoing industrial action when the federal government releases the sum of N50billion revitalisation fund.

ASUU President, Professor Biodun Ogunyemi who stated this in Ibadan, the Oyo state capital, insisted that the federal government must pay the N50 billion revitalisation fund for the union to consider suspending the ongoing strike.

Ogunyemi, while speaking during a press conference held at the ASUU Secretariat, University of Ibadan, disclosed that members of the union have said only concrete evidence of implementation by the government would make them return to the classrooms.

He maintained that the union has lost confidence in government making empty promises which it will not keep to after agreements have been reached.

Ogunyemi further revealed that other conditions attached to the suspension of the strike is the presentation of concrete evidence of the payment of the promised N20billion earned academic allowances and showing how the balance of N85billion will be paid with timelines.

According to Ogunyemi, while ASUU has rejected government’s proposal of N20billion (which is to be paid in two tranches) for the revitalisation of universities, the union is asking government to mainstream the earned academic allowances into the 2019 budget which is still being worked upon by the National Assembly.

He lamented that Nigeria’s ruling class does not see education as a priority but prefer to create new education colonies of private educational institutions which cannot meet the needs of Nigerian children.

Ogunyemi said, “We want them to pay immediately N50billion as a sign of commitment this quarter and for the next three quarters government can pay N50billion in each quarter.

“So our members have rejected the 20billion proposed by them that will be spread over two quarters in 2019.

“Our members have insisted on the release of at least N50billion. In relation to earned academic allowances which they have an outstanding N105billion our members are saying that even if you (Government) are releasing N20billion let it be stated clearly that it is only for ASUU members and the balance which you promised to pay in four instalments, attach timelines to the balance and figures. In 2017, this government promised to mainstream the earned academic allowances into the budget so that we wont be coming to talk about arrears.

“If government had done put that into the 2018 budget we would not be talking about arrears now.

“Our members are saying government should take steps to mainstream it into the 2019 budget and that is not late because they (National assembly and executive) are still working on the budget,” he said.
